Although founded less than a year ago, the Men's Lacrosse Club at the University of Baltimore already is going strong and is ready to participate in a league and more games and tournaments.
"I've never seen a club team work that fast," said Colleen Sperry, assistant director of the Athletic Club.
Bryan Barletto, third-year law student, had the idea to start the club, but said that Sperry "has been the driving force to get the team off the ground."
Open to any UB student, the team roster has grown to 20 players since January. Initially, most members who joined the team had played in high school or at a prior college and were just looking to meet others close to lacrosse.
"However, since we received such a great turnout last year, the focus of the club has turned to advancing the club to new levels," said Barletto, president of the Lacrosse Club. "Ideally, the team will eventually join an interscholastic club lacrosse league, compete in various local tournaments and develop into a ‘program.'"
The team currently is self-funded—they bought their own uniforms, supplied their own gear and pay their own tournament fees, including referee fees. Clubs aren't eligible for financial support from the Athletic Club until they've been active for one year.
The Lacrosse Club meets about twice a week to practice, play and participate in tournaments. Their home field is at Mt. Washington. They've played against Carroll County Lacrosse Club and Morgan State, with a record of 2-0, and they played in the Charm City Lacrosse Classic.
"A roster full of law students, grad students and undergrad students came together as one team representing the University of Baltimore," Sperry said.
Ideally, the UB team will play about six games this year, as well as participate in numerous tournaments in Maryland.
"I think the entire team shares a passion for the sport," Barletto said. "Lacrosse is unique because it is a very small and close-knit community; that's something that makes the sport special."
According to Sperry, the team will be holding some fundraisers this year, as well as possibly competing in a "North Charles Street" tournament.
The club's adviser is Don Haynes, Ph.D., associate professor of government and public administration.
