Adding to a growing list of club sports at the University of Baltimore, a table tennis club is in the formation stages. Table tennis is an activity better known by its trademarked name, Ping-Pong. While Ping-Pong is considered a game played for fun, table tennis is considered an actual sport.
Following a recent table tennis tournament held at the Athletic Club, a group of students decided to form a club. Jason Morstein, business management student, is the president.
"Since people seem to want to play, we are going to have our first official day this coming Thursday, Dec. 7, from 1 to 3 p.m.," Morstein said. "So far we just compete against anyone who shows up; we just play each other, and the winner stays on the table."
As an intramural sport at UB, the Table Tennis Club will involve students playing against one another instead of against students from rival schools. The club is open to players of all skill levels.
Professor Robert Lande, venerable professor of law, agreed to be the adviser of the club.
"I am delighted to be the Table Tennis Club faculty sponsor because I play table tennis competitively...and think that it is a great sport," Lande said. "You can play very hard and competitively or just to relax and have fun."
Table tennis is a good activity for a variety of people, according to Lande, who said, "Everyone can play on an almost equal basis. Even someone my age—I am 54—can win the University of Baltimore title as I did this year. On the other hand, I recently lost to a 12-year-old girl."
