Construction on a new parking garage will not disrupt the spring semester, the location of temporary lots is currently under negotiation and, although an increase in parking fees is imminent, there has been no decision reached for the amount of the increase, according to the University of Baltimore University Council.

"Barbara Aughenbaugh and Steve Cassard assured the University Council that construction in Bolton Yard will not start until the summer," said Michele Gilligan, associate professor of law and University Council parliamentarian.

Aughenbaugh is the Office of Auxiliary Enterprises associate vice president; Cassard is the Office of Administration and Finance assistant vice president for campus planning and real estate development.

Gilligan also reiterated that, during construction, alternate parking will be provided—the developer is required to replace each lost parking space with an alternative one.

From December through February, the University Council Facilities Committee conducted an anonymous online survey seeking feedback on parking from UB students, faculty and staff. Over 560 responses were received.

Comments included concerns about safety in Bolton Lot and the parking garage. One student said, "I feel that walking over to that lot at night is like taking one's life into one's hands."

Many students expressed frustration. "It is really horrid to waste half an hour driving around the lot and the garage looking for a space!" said another student.

The number one concern expressed in the survey is the certainty of having a parking space; the second concern is the cost; and, most students expressed disapproval toward any increase in parking fees.

The University Council is still reviewing survey results.

The University Council is the central policy-recommending body of UB, the highest level of shared governance at UB and reports to President Robert L. Bogomolny. The group includes administrators, faculty and members of student government. For updates on University Council findings, visit the University Council website.
