The University of Baltimore Finance Society is seeing renewed vigor after five years of inactivity. Fifty people attended the first general meeting in March called, "A Night of Celebration."

We are "taking on more than the previous Finance Society," said Evan "Drew" Costello, finance major and co-vice president, in reference to the group's ambitious plans.

Steve Isberg, Ph.D., associate professor of finance, helped restart the club when MBA finance students Andreas "Andre" Prasetiya, president, and Lingaraju "Raj" Virupaxappa, treasurer, sought a forum for those interested in finance, investment and banking at UB.

The idea is "networking," Prasetiya said. Instead of "who you know," we now say, "Who knows you?"

As part of the group's celebration night, UB alumni Eric Rosenfeldt and Genti Cici, both successful employees in corporate development and investment analysis, spoke about their current positions and the dedication it took to get there.

During the meeting, the group, which now has 40 members, announced plans to visit a venture capital and service company in Baltimore this semester.

This trip will help students "share experiences in current economic conditions, bridge the gap between economic and real-world practice while building up UB credentials," Prasetiya said.

Costello anticipates that the Finance Society will help students find careers.

Also at the meeting, plans were announced to start an investment club as a branch of the Finance Society. The spin-off club will offer students experience in managing an investment portfolio.

"Research, proposals, officers and details are still in the process," Prasetiya said of the investment club.

Until the club is underway, Costello would like students to join in "practice investing." Separate from the Finance Society, students will meet regularly to learn "how to invest through…the non-use of real money," he said.

The Finance Society is open to students in all majors. Anyone interested in finance, banking and investment is encouraged to join. Upcoming general meetings will be on April 9 and 23. Meeting locations will be posted on the Finance Society's website, and food and drinks will be provided.
