Following the conclusion of the Spring Job Search Group (JSG) on March 25, group leader and licensed clinical counselor Malka Weintraub extended the meetings for members either still looking for careers or seeking to further develop their networking skills and list of professional contacts.
Several other JSG members, including David Bowser, finance student, continued to attend the extended meetings, even after securing a summer internship at T. Rowe Price. Dominique Mastrangelo, alumna, also took advantage of the continued meetings and participation in The UB Post blog. See Mastrangelo's bio online.
Bowser plans to leverage his success and experience interviewing for the position to make inroads with a host of related finance companies, including UBS, Legg Mason and Lehman Brothers.
Bowser continued to use resources within the campus to make professional contacts-The Career Center's eRecruiting and the UB Alumni Network. As another networking tool, Bowser had business cards made to "act as a portable resume" listing his contact information, major and a list of professional experiences and strengths.
Mastrangelo also took a handson approach to market herself to potential employers in a distinct way-she began developing a website to showcase her talents, which speaks directly to her mission of landing a job as an online marketing manager.
Both Weintraub and Mastrangelo hope the online identity will be an asset as Mastrangelo schedules informational interviews with employers; so far, she has met with companies ranging from USA Today to retailer Peet's Coffee & Tea.
Part of finding the job she wants has been identifying the jobs that she doesn't want. At a meeting with a potential employer, Mastrangelo didn't feel a connection. The contact wanted to place her in an entrylevel position at a small business, which is the opposite of what she is looking for.
To motivate herself, Mastrangelo created a "Daily Action Plan" to structure her day and ensure that she is working toward her goals.
Bowser exercises similar discipline in tracking his progress. He compiled the names of companies, with two contacts from each, in a spreadsheet to track the companies that he will ask for informational interviews after graduation. He already has 30 targeted companies.
JSG participant Linda Christian accepted a part-time job with the Baltimore Education Network and discontinued her participation in the group.
